Irish football club Drogheda United is preparing to travel to Turkey to face Turkish side Trabzonspor in a unique friendly match at the 40,000-seat Papara Park. This encounter marks the culmination of a remarkable two-decade-long connection between the two clubs, driven by shared colors, symbols, and a mutual passion for the game.
The Origins of an Unlikely Football Friendship
The relationship began back in 2006 when Trabzonspor fans browsing an online forum noticed that the small Irish club shared the star and crescent symbols of the Turkish flag, alongside matching claret and blue club colors. Over the years, this bond deepened significantly. When Drogheda United faced financial difficulties and entered examinership in 2008, Turkish supporters sent letters containing cash to help the team. Their status as official sister clubs was formalized in 2010, though a planned 2013 friendly in Dublin was unfortunately canceled due to heavy rainfall.
A Strong Digital and Physical Crossover
Today, the connection extends far beyond cyberspace. Around 30% of Drogheda's social media following originates from Turkey, and Turkish flags and shirts are frequently seen at their matches. Some supporters, such as Cafer Bektas, have even relocated close to the Irish stadium. Now, a dedicated group of about 30 to 35 Boynesiders fans are making the 4,700-kilometer journey to Turkey, where local hosts have already offered accommodation.
The Anticipation Around Mohamed Salah
Adding to the excitement of the fixture is the presence of star forward Mohamed Salah, who joined Trabzonspor in August and received a hero's welcome. While his exact involvement on the pitch remains uncertain after recent international duty with Egypt, chief executive Rian Wogan notes that simply having him in the stadium elevates the magnitude of the event.
Next fixture: Drogheda United will play their historic friendly against Trabzonspor on Thursday on the Black Sea coast in north-east Turkey.
