Burnley FC finances and the impact of the Everton compensation
The English football club Burnley has published its financial accounts for the 2025-26 season, revealing a reported loss of £9m. However, this seemingly positive figure hides a fragile underlying economic reality. Without a landmark £38.8m compensation payout from Everton, the Championship club would have faced a record loss of £47.8m despite generating all-time high revenues of £144.5m during the campaign.
The leveraged buyout by ALK Capital and heavy debts
Six years ago, the Clarets were considered one of the best-run teams in the country, sitting debt-free with significant cash reserves. Everything changed when ALK Capital completed a leveraged buyout in December 2020. The purchase relied heavily on loans secured against the club's own assets, such as Turf Moor, and its bank balance. Over the following seasons, borrowings surged significantly, reaching a peak of £142.3m with high interest rates, causing massive concern among supporters.
How the latest accounts were balanced
The recent accounts show that the overall debt has decreased to £62.9m. This reduction was achieved through three main financial injections: a payment of £77.7m from holding company Velocity Capital to clear acquisition debts, Premier League broadcasting money, and the controversial compensation from Everton. The Premier League team Everton was ordered to pay the sum following a profit and sustainability breach in 2021-22 that negatively impacted Burnley's survival chances.
Uncertain future and ongoing sporting challenges
Despite the short-term relief, the financial stability remains vulnerable. The Everton compensation payout is currently subject to an appeal expected to be heard in January, meaning the funds could potentially be repaid in full. Meanwhile, on the pitch, the team is struggling in the Championship relegation zone under the new management of Swiss coach Fabio Celestini.
Prochaine échéance : Burnley will look to reverse their poor sporting form and secure crucial league points in their upcoming fixtures as they battle to climb out of the Championship relegation zone.
