European football was shaken by recent disciplinary rulings as the UEFA control, ethics and disciplinary body handed out severe sanctions to Dutch club Feyenoord and French side RC Lens following crowd disturbances during the opening matches of the prestigious Ligue des champions. The governing body takes a firm stance against supporter misconduct across all European competitions, impacting clubs striving for success in international football.
Feyenoord heavy penalties after Barcelona trip
The Dutch club Feyenoord received a total fine of 74,375 euros following their difficult away match against Spanish powerhouse FC Barcelona on September 9, where the team suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat. Within this total penalty, 25,000 euros directly target racist or discriminatory behavior exhibited by visiting supporters. Furthermore, additional financial penalties were issued for throwing objects on the pitch amounting to 26,375 euros, stadium property damage valued at 13,000 euros, and displaying an unauthorized banner deemed incompatible with a sporting event costing 10,000 euros. A suspended 25 percent reduction on away ticket allocations was also applied.
RC Lens punished for pyrotechnics in Prague
On the other hand, French Ligue 1 representatives RC Lens faced disciplinary action regarding their thrilling 3-2 victory against Czech opponents Slavia Prague away from home on September 10. Despite securing a valuable win in European football, the club must pay a 15,000 euro fine due to supporters igniting pyrotechnic devices in the stands. Additionally, the away supporters enclosure was placed under a suspended ban carrying a two-year probationary period, warning the club against any future infractions.
