Former Manchester City striker Imre Varadi expressed his delight after seeing the club supporters wave inflatable bananas during the Premier League match against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. The English football supporters revived a famous tradition from the late 1980s, bringing a sense of humor and nostalgia back into the stands.
The Origin of the Banana Craze in English Football
The tradition dates back to the late 1980s when Imre Varadi played for the English club Manchester City during a two-year spell. Fans nicknamed the forward 'Imre Banana' and started bringing inflatable bananas to games at Maine Road when the team played in the old Second Division. The craze quickly spread across English football grounds before resurfacing dramatically at Anfield during their recent fixture.
Bringing Fun Back to Modern Football
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Drive, Varadi shared his pride in seeing his legacy live on nearly forty years later. He noted that the return of the yellow inflatables injected much-needed joy into the football atmosphere. The former player, who now sells the inflatable novelties through the club, explained how a simple fan nickname transformed into a widespread stadium tradition.
Next Fixture
Manchester City will look to maintain their sporting momentum on the pitch as they prepare for their upcoming Premier League fixtures amidst ongoing club developments.
