Uncertainty regarding the readiness of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has prompted the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to consider alternatives in the world of African football, with Morocco emerging as a potential contingency option.
Concerns over stadium construction in East Africa
With the tournament scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027, ongoing delays in completing essential infrastructure—most notably the Talanta Sports Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya—have raised significant alarms. A CAF inspection committee recently visited the three host nations to evaluate construction progress, highlighting a race against time just months before the competition begins.
CAF stance and Patrice Motsepe statements
Although official communications have sought to reassure the public, statements from CAF president Patrice Motsepe during his East African tour revealed underlying anxiety. While Motsepe firmly insisted that there is no alternative plan, he openly acknowledged the urgency of the situation, admitting that being just months away from the tournament creates a pressing challenge.
What lies ahead for the tournament
The status of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations remains delicate while the football community awaits the final evaluation scheduled for January. Should a relocation become necessary, Morocco stands ready as a natural choice due to its modern sports infrastructure and extensive experience in organizing major international football events, though no official decision has been finalized yet.
