The global football community is preparing for a landmark gathering as the prestigious Ballon d'Or ceremony returns to England, taking place on Monday at the London Palladium. Seventy years after the very first award was presented, this new edition marks a significant homecoming for the historic accolade that honors the finest players in the sport.
From Blackpool town hall to the London Palladium
When football dignitaries assemble at the famous London venue, the setting will be vastly different from the modest origins of the prize. Exactly seven decades ago, the inaugural ceremony took place in the much simpler surroundings of Blackpool town hall. At that historic event, English legend Stanley Matthews was presented with the coveted trophy by Gabriel Hanot, the visionary editor of the French publication L'Équipe who originally conceived the idea of crowning the world's best footballer annually.
A revolutionary football legacy
The family of Stanley Matthews has expressed immense excitement regarding this special tribute to the legendary winger, often described as a revolutionary figure of the game. During the first-ever ceremony in Blackpool, a specially commissioned china plate was also handed over alongside the main honor, commemorating a tradition that has since grown into the most prestigious individual prize in world football.
Looking ahead to Monday's gala
As the football world turns its attention to the British capital, anticipation continues to build for Monday's gala event at the London Palladium. This upcoming ceremony will not only crown the modern stars of the game but also pay a fitting tribute to the rich history initiated by Stanley Matthews and Gabriel Hanot seventy years ago.
