In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday evening, the SAFE did not hold back its frustration regarding the disciplinary commission's verdict. The organization argued that for a mere 20,000 euros, individuals can now freely question an official's impartiality or demand their disqualification without facing meaningful consequences. The union emphasized that this lenient outcome demonstrates deep disrespect toward male and female referees across the professional game.

The controversy stems from a series of aggressive communications sent by the Lille president following a late goal conceded during the second matchday of the championship. According to match referee Eric Wattelier's report, Letang shouted in the stadium corridors that the situation was a scandal and that he had warned officials beforehand. Subsequently, the executive sent multiple emails, including one late at night copied to FFF and LFP leaders, warning that Lille might refuse to play or show up if Wattelier were ever appointed to officiate their matches again.
Past incidents and calls for restraint
This is not the first time the Lille president has clashed with refereeing authorities. Earlier in January, he had already served a two-month suspension following similar behavior toward the same official after a match against Rennes. Concluding their statement, the referees union expressed deep concern that such severe incidents are occurring so early in the season, urging all clubs and officials to respect established protocols and maintain composure throughout the campaign.
